Hanlon wins the Greville Cup
Alan Hanlon continued his good vein of form last Wednesday night to win his second cup in week. He followed up last week’s McManus Cup win with an equally impressive victory in the Tommy Greville Cup this week.
The evening was perfect for Pitch and Putt and the 21 players that took to the tee were all keen to get their hands on this old prestigious cup. It was Hanlon and Michael Buckley that set a blistering pace though as both men shot 10 under par 44′s in their opening round. Indeed they left most of the field in their wake with only John Browne (48) and Kevin Farrell (50) really still in touching distance.
Farrell and Browne kicked on well though in the second round in their pursuit of the leaders. Browne opened with a 7 under for the front 9 to move him to 13 in total and Farrell played the first 12 holes in 6 under to move him to a 15 under total. Unfortunate bogies for Farrell on 15 and 17 though put paid to his chances. Browne picked up 2 more birdies coming in to set the clubhouse lead on 15 under par.
Hanlon soon over took this though by shooting a second round 47 to move him into a 3 shot lead. The only real threat that was left on the course was Michael Buckley. Unfortunately as the night sky closed in, so with it came the rain and conditions rapidly deteriorated. This undoubtedly had an effect on Mick’s score and eventually he had to settle for a 14 under total. This meant that Hanlon had recaptured a cup that he had twice before won with a score of 90 (gross + nett). John Browne finished runner-up on 93. Unfortunately we did not have enough Ladies to meet the quota for a Ladies prize on the night.
