On Wednesday night last, 9th of September the Des McManus cup was played in glorious sunshine. 21 players took to the field for this prestigious event. Despite the poor weather conditions of the past number of weeks the course was presented in excellent condition. So couple that with no wind, the general consensus was that it would take a very good score to win

The early pace setter was Martin Carter, who returned a 48 first round to leave him 12 under including his handicap. Stuart Tarleton also made a good start and was 2 under for 10 holes. A couple of loos shots though seen him eventually return a 55 and so he was 8 under nett after round 1. Liam Buckley had a very solid bogie free 47 to keep him in the mix and Larry McGinn was right up there too with a 48. Kevin Farrell’s 52 left him on 8 under nett as well and peter Dolan was on 6 under at this stage.

Liz Quinn, winner of the Ladies prize

The second round was all about one man though. Liam Buckley kicked for home from early in the round as he recorded birdie after birdie to return a superb 45 to give him a total of 92. It was the club-house lead and it turned out to be a lead that wouldn’t be caught. Peter Dolan was the nearest to Liam in the end as he added a second round 47 to his earlier 49 for a nett total of 95 and runners-up spot. Other notable finishers were Larry McGinn on 96 and Martin Carter on 97.

The Ladies event was won by Liz Quinn with an excellent score of 100. Liam was gracious in his speech to committee for the continuing work on the course and wished the finalists the best of luck in next weeks Doubles final.
