PRO’s Weekly Report -16th August 2010
MICHAEL FLYNN CLARET JUG.
Once again this competition proved to be an outstanding success. 27 players started on Saturday morning and 2 remained standing on Sunday evening.
After play on Saturday 16 players were left to do battle on Sunday and at the stroke of 9.30 a.m. on Sunday morning a draw was made for the 16 players who each played 18 holes matchplay. After that round there were 8 when another draw was made and a further 18 holes matchplay were played. After that round we had the semi-finals and in those semi- finals were two previous winners of this competition namely Peter Dolan & Liam Buckley and the other two were Paddy Gorman and Michael Heffernan who are relatively new comers. Michael Heffernan played Liam Buckley and Peter Dolan played Paddy Gorman. This was another 18 hole matchplay game and doesn’t leave any room for error on anybody’s part and the two rookies ran out winners over the two more experienced players. The scene was set for a nail biting finale and this was a 36 hole matchplay competition. Both boys played well and Michael Heffernan was 4 up after the first 18 holes. Paddy came back at him mid way through the second 18 holes and leveled the match at the 15th when he chipped in for a birdie. Michael had a good win on the 16th to go one in front again. At the 17th both found the sand but Mick had the better finish and won 2&1. It was a great final and it was nice to see two newer members doing battle.
The course was in great nick and it was a fabulous sunny afternoon. Well done to all who played and especially to Michael Heffernan who was the winner and Paddy Gorman who was r/up. This competition is running since 2004 and no one person has won it a second time so far which is great for the game. We are indebted to Clubman Michael Flynn who is the sponsor of this great competition and who provides the prizes every year and this year was no exception. Once again thanks Michael Flynn.

Thanks also to Michael Flynn who provided the goodies for the teas and to Ena who gave a hand with same. Thanks to John Browne who was there all day on Saturday & Sunday along with Larry McGinn to run the competition so efficiently. It was very efficient this year and the times were excellent and there were no delays which was great.
Once again another wonderful weekend of Pitch & Putt comes to a close and once again we were blessed with weather, good play and good craic.
COMPETITIONS TO COME.
On Tuesday evening next the 17th we have the final of the Gavigan Cup between Peter Dolan and Brian Caffrey at 7p.m. and on the following evening Weds. 18th, we have the Des McManus Cup at 6.30 p.m. This will complete our major competitions for 2010.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
On Saturday next the 21st at 10a.m. we will have the semi-finals and finals of the Player of the Year both ladies and gents and also the Committees Prize. A few places are still hang in the balance and will depend on the two competitions during the week. We wish all involved the best of luck.
I have to say that all our competitions have been run off very efficiently this year and is due in no small way to our excellent Competition Secretaries Larry McGinn & John Browne.
OUTING.
Don’t forget Saturday 28th. August is our annual Outing and this year we are not going too far away as we will be in Tullamore which is a great course.
