PRO’s Weekly Report – 22nd August 2011

CAPTAINS WEEKEND.

What a weekend it turned out to be. From commencement at 2pm on Friday afternoon until the last ball was struck about 8.30pm on Sunday evening it was a feast of Pitch & Putt of the highest caliber. The weather on Friday afternoon wasn’t the best but boy did Saturday and Sunday turn out to be two of the best days we’ve had all summer. The course was in terrific condition, the fairways manicured to perfection. The scene was set for one of our prestigious weekends on the clubs calendar. There were around 250 rounds of pitch and putt played. Some of our members played 14 and 15 rounds each over the 2 1/2 days which was wonderful.   I mustn’t forget to mention our two wonderful Captains Larry McGinn, Gents Captain & Liz Bloem, Lady Captain. They did us and themselves so proud. Their prizes were just phenomenal and everyone played their hearts out to win one of those coveted prizes. Last card was 5pm on Sunday evening and the play off was scheduled for 6pm. In the playoff we had 6 Gents and 2 Ladies. The 6 Gents with the highest scores were Liam Buckley – 24, John Browne – 23, Kevin Farrell – 23, Peter Dolan, Martin Carter & Liam Hetherton all on a score of – 19 for two rounds. The Ladies final was contested by Ena Clinton & Moira. Ena was leading by 6 or 7 shots going into the playoff and this lead didn’t change after the final 18 holes. In the Gents section things were much tighter. After the 18 hole Playoff the state of play was Liam Buckley & Kevin Farrell were level hence a further 9 hole playoff. This was a great contest and everyone present was treated to a great spectacle of pitch and putt and sportsmanship. Kevin had a 1 1/2 shot advantage over Liam, by way of handicap, and after the 9 hole play off Kevin emerged the winner by 1 1/2 shots. There was much jubilation by the Mullingar contingent when their  comrade took the trophy overcoming the money on favourite.

The full result is as follows:

LADIES

Winner:   Ena Clinton

R/Up:   Moira Nugent.

GENTS

Winner:   Kevin Farrell

R/Up:   Liam Buckley

Last 18:   John Browne

36 Nett:   Liam Hetherton.

There were 8 holes- in-one but the winner of the prize for same was Steven Ruane, by virtue of the fact that he had two holes in one in the same round.

Afterwards the Chairman Des Carter said a few words and thanked our Captains for their wonderful prizes, to Liz who catered for everyone with her culinary cuisine which was greatly appreciated especially her Bacon butties. He also thanked our Ground staff Colm and Sean and Martin who mows the fairways so diligently and does such a great job on same and anyone who does work on the course voluntarily. The respective captains presented their beautiful prizes to the relevant winners.   Once again it was a brilliant weekend and everyone enjoyed themselves. There was a wonderful turnout of our members for the great competition and rightly so to honour our two great captains for 2011.

GAVIGAN CUP.

We have a very busy week coming up as on Tuesday evening we have the Final of the Gavigan Cup and contesting this competition is Watty Kenny & Liam Hetherton. This should be a great contest and we would encourage as many of our members as possible to come along and lend their support as both contestants are great clubmen.

DES McMANUS CUP.

On the following night we have the above competition and it will commence at 6pm sharp.

FINALS OF PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

On Saturday next the 27th we have the Semi-finals & Final of the Player of the Year and also the Committees Prize. Play will commence at 10 am on that morning. At the moment I don’t know who will be involved in same as we have two competitions this week  and points will be awarded to winners of same before the final scores will be known.

OUTING.

Please note that our Annual Outing will take place on Saturday 17th September to the Acres Pitch & Putt Course in Ballinalee in Longford and we hope all our members will try and go on this Outing as it is always a great day.
