PRO’s Weekly Report – 31st August 2009

OUTING.

On Saturday last the 29th inst. 28 of our members and friends set off to the beautiful windswept course of Seapoint, outside of Drogheda.   Some of us went by bus, driven by our Secretary, Mary Carroll while the rest of the crew got there by other means.  It was great to see Sinead & Ken Creegan join us again as did the  Murphy brothers and Fintan Kelly, who are all relations to John Browne.   We assembled at 11 o’clock and were greeted by Margaret McCabe on behalf of the Seapoint club.   We had tea and biscuits on arrival.   Then we had a 3 person Scramble followed by tea and sandwiches.   We then had a Scotch Foursomes followed by 2 rounds of Singles, for anyone who had energy enough to complete the marathon.   Some of us lazier people only played the one round of singles.   The course was in superb condition and was very tricky in places when the strong westerly wind came into play which was quite often.  When play was finished we titivated ourselves and headed to The Harbour Bar in nearby Clogherhead for our well earned dinner.   We had SOME   dinner there followed by plates of dessert washed down by tea or coffee.   We were hardly able to get up from the table afterwards.   We must thank Mary Carroll’s sister, Anne who is the Chef there and she really looked after us wonderfully well.

The presentation of prizes then took place.   Here we must thank our fellow  Clubman, Michael Flynn who sponsored all the prizes for this Outing and has done so for the past number of years.   He made some of them personally himself and they were beautiful.   It was good to see his wife, Geraldine, there on Saturday and in great form again.   Of course I couldn’t leave out their lovely daughter Michelle who was the professional Photographer for the day.    I am not going to list the prizewinners here suffice to say that everyone was a winner.   There was a special Presentation made to both our Chairman, Des Carter and our Secretary, Mary Carroll, in recognition of all the work they have put into the club during the past year.    We sat back then for the night and enjoyed the music and craic.   Thanks again to Mary Carroll who organised the Outing and got us there safely and home again.

COMPETITIONS.

The IUNVA Cup was held on Sunday evening last the 23rd inst. with a 5 p.m. start.   There were only 14 entrants.   The winner was Paul Byrne, R/Up was Larry McGinn and Lady Winner was Liz Quinn.

The Tommy Greville Cup was held on Weds. evening last, the 26th. inst. with a 6 p.m. start.   There was a good entry for same, i.e. 20 players.   The winner was the inform man of the moment Liam Hetherton,   R/Up was the also inform man Martin Carter.   The winner of the lady’s prize was Ena Clinton.   Thanks to Moira Nugent,  Vice Chairperson  who filled in for Des who was unavoidably absent. The course is improving all the time thanks to our groundsmen Colm & Sean.

CONGRATULATIONS.

Best of luck to Liz Quinn & Alan Hanlon who qualified for the National Mixed Foursomes in Deerpark in Killarney on the 20th of September.   They were also playing in Ryston today in the Leinster Mixed Foursomes but I do not have any results at present.   We would also like to wish the best of luck to both of the Westmeath teams who will be competing in Cloghogue in the Inter Counties next weekend.   Both Liz Quinn & Larry McGinn will be playing.   We hope that as many of our members as possible will get to Cloghogue, just outside Newry to lend their support.

Ena Clinton, PRO.
