PRO’s Weekly Report – 5th September 2011

SEMI -FINALS & FINALS OF PLAYER OF THE YEAR & COMMITTEES PRIZE.

On Sat. 27th August we held the above competitions. This is the culmination of all our club competitions over the past year. In the Ladies Player of the Year the semi finalists were Liz Bloem – v – Moira Nugent & Ena Clinton – v – Anne Kelly. Liz overcame Moira on a  6&5 margin and Ena beat Anne 2&1 leaving the final a repeat of last year of  aunt  & niece in final. Liz won easily with a 6&5 margin.

COMMITTEES PRIZE.

In this competition in the first semi – final we had father & son, Paddy Browne pitted against his son John. There was no quarter given in this match and John won on a 3&2 margin.  In the second semi Larry McGinn played Peter Dolan. This was a close affair the whole way but Larry won out by a 2&1 margin. Larry  played John in a nail biting final and it went to the wire with Larry emerging winner by the narrowest of margins.

In the Gents Player of the Year semi finals we had Liam Buckley against Kevin Farrell and despite Liam giving a good few shots to the Mullingar man he ran out an easy winner.   In the second semi we had Liam Hetherton pitted against Martin Carter. Liam was in fine form and won easily enough on a score of 5&4. This left  the 2 Liams in the final, Liam Buckley & Liam Hetherton. This was a ding dong battle as would be expected. The latter was getting 4 or 5 shots from the former and with all square going to the 36th hole both men pitched the green. Liam Buckley was 4 or 5 ft. from hole while Liam Hetherton was about 2 foot from same.  Liam Buckley putt first and his putt lipped the hole but stayed out. Liam Hetherton made no mistake and slotted his putt in the centre of  the hole to win by the narrowest of margins.  This was the culmination of a great week for Liam Hetherton as he won two other club competitions the previous week making it a hat trick for the King of the Castles.

GAVIGAN CUP

This final was played on Tuesday evening the 24th August between Watty Kenny & Liam Hetherton. 32 players started out on this journey 6 weeks earlier and were whittled away to the two participants in the final. Liam won in the end but fair play to Watty  who put up a great show and  beat a number of fancied players on his path to the final.

DES McMANUS CUP.

This competition was played on Weds. evening 25th August and again the winner was the in-form Liam Hetherton.   R/Up was Alan Hanlon.

INTER COUNTIES.

The above competition takes place in Portmarnock on Saturday & Sunday next the 10th & 11th.   The ladies play on Saturday and the gents on Sunday. A number of our club members are involved on the Inter County teams. On the ladies team we have Liz Bloem, Anne Kelly and Moira Nugent and on the Gents team we have both John Browne & Larry McGinn. We wish both Westmeath teams the best of luck.
