Gaeil Colmcille – current holders of the Sean Coyne Memorial Trophy

The Sean Coyne Memorial for 2013 kicked off in a sun-baked Gaeil Colmcille course on Saturday 16th March. Thirty five players took to the field for this popular early season event. After years of domination of this tournament by Collinstown, the tables have been turned in recent times by the Gaeil Colmcille club. Indeed this year the south Meath club are attempting to achieve the 3 in-a-row in this prestigious competition.

And indeed the home club were not found wanting as the scores started to come in from the course. The ever dependable Johnny Mooney led the way with a superb 96 gross for the home team off a 7 handicap. This was supplemented by 87 nett from Marty Reilly and a couple of 91′s from Liam and Mark Farrell. A very credible 94 nett from Monica McGovern also helped the Kells team cause. In fact when the final 10 counting scores were totaled, Gaeil Colmcille finished with a very credible score of 921 shots.

The travelling Collinstown team had their stars too though led by the club chairman Mick Buckley. Mick recorded a superb 91 gross to score the best gross total of the day. But the Collinstown leading score went to the ever competitive Martin Carter. Martin recorded an 89 nett which included a superb second round 45. Another star on the day was new comer Kevin Flanaghan who recorded a very credible 93. Willie Ayres also had a solid 95 which helped the away team’s cause. After totting up the Collinstown total and final score of 969 was the result.

That means that Gaeil Colmcille lead by 48 shots going into the second leg in Collinstown which is now arranged for Sunday 14th April at 12  noon. The lead is substantial but certainly not insurmountable and both teams will feel that there is still everything to play for.
